CMTi is a South African technology company that was established in 1994 while the major shareholders were lecturers at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Pretoria. Prof. Danie Burger was the head of the design group and founder of the company. Since inception CMTi has been involved in the development of locally produced, mechan... ised mining equipment to help address the impending crisis of diminishing returns and reduced viability facing the mining industry, both here in SA and globally. Since 2011 CMTi has been focused on the development of remote controlled ultra-low profile (ULP) mining machines, integrated brake-testing equipment, and rail-bound transport solutions, such as a unique hybrid diesel-electric locomotive. This cutting edge equipment is now being deployed for use in narrow vein deep hard rock mines i.e. Gold and platinum. The program started out as part of the Goldfields Innovation initiative and CMTi remains the current technology partner for Sibanye Gold and Sibanye Platinum.
