About Cleaveland
The company was started in 1850 by Eilhu Geer of the Hartford City Directory fame, and has been headed through the years by prominent local men and women. The company got its name from Frank E. Cleaveland, a blind lawyer, who took over the legal blank business in 1880. Others who have carried on the traditions of the company included George H. Carrier of Glastonbury, prominent in real estate activities in the early years of the 1900s; Albert H. HouseofWindsor; John Lee Brooks and Louis St. Clair Burr, who purchased the business in 1931. Burr changed the company name to Cleaveland Legal Blank Service. After his death in 1946 the business was carried on by his widow. She retired at the age of 82, in 1960, and the business was sold to Mrs. Elena Burr Tuthill her daughter. In 1968 Mrs. Tuthill sold the business to Mary Brescia, who operated it with her son, Matt (President of Brescia's Printing Services, Inc.), until 1978. It was then sold to her son-in-law, Gordon T.
