The Cincinnati Gear Company was founded in 1907 to serve the rapidly expanding machine tool industry in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. During the 1950's, The Cincinnati Gear Company led the industry in the design and manufacture of epicyclic gear units for a wide range of powers and speeds. Cincinnati Gear soon broadened its product field and became an integral part of marine gear design and innovation. The company pioneered the development of lightweight, gas turbine marine propulsion gearboxes in the early 1970's with the design and production of the marine reduction gears for the Kawasaki/Jetfoil high-speed passenger ferry. Since that time, Cincinnati Gear has produced thousands of high performance marine reduction gears for a variety of programs, utilizing both diesel and gas turbine applications. In 1995, Cincinnati Gear became a truly global enterprise with the acquisition of the long-established BHS Sonthofen GmbH, located in Sonthofen, Germany.
