About Christ The King Monastery

WHERE WERE YOU IN THE 1960's? Florida was mission territory when the Poor Clares came to establish the first cloistered, contemplative monastery, later on to be known as Christ the King Monastery of St Clare, Delray Beach, Florida. This is how we came to be... In 1957, there was no Diocese of Miami. There were no Poor Clares in south Florida, either. But, in 1958, all that changed! Coleman F. Carroll was installed in October as the first Bishop of the new Diocese of Miami. He invited Poor Clares from Bordentown, New Jersey, to come to South Florida to pray for the people, and especially for the priests. The invitation was accepted and on July 4, 1960, the way of life of the Order of St. Clare in Delray Beach, Florida, began. There was an old bungalo on some property owned by St Vincent Ferrer Parish, and it was offered as residence for the original six pioneering nuns from New Jersey. The community grew, and for seven years, additions were made to the building to accomodate them. EventRead more
