Cedar Hill Cemetery

As a Cemetery Board, we truly are guardians of the communitys heritage. The proper, permanent and perpetual memoralization in a cemetery is of paramount importance to us. Cedar Hill Cemetery occupies a commanding site on one of the highest hills just a little south of the Harbor of Port Jefferson. The Cedar Hill Cemetery Association was formed Marc... h 30th 1859. In April of that year thirteen acres, to be used as a cemetery, were purchased by Hubbard Gildersleeve. The first Association officers were: R. H. Wilson, President; J. B Randall, secretary; Abram Brown, treasurer. The first trustees were the officers named Hamilton Tooker, Daniel Hulse and Cyrus E. Griffing. The Brookhaven Town Cemetery list, as prepared by Osborn Shaw, describes Cedar Hill Cemetery as such: "Cedar Hill Cemetery, entered by a narrow lane leading north from the Sheep Pasture Road, about 1/4 mile northwest from Port Jefferson railroad station, at Comsewogue or Echo. This cemetery, comprising 17 acres, is controlled by the Cedar Hill Cemetery Association formed 30 Apr. 1859, at which time 13 acres were purchased by Hubbard Gildersleeve. The first burial was that of Mary B. Hulse, wife of Charles L. Hulse, who died 27 March 1859.
