CKLN in collaboration with the University of the West Indies, enabled a pilot telecast of an introductory module on minimally invasive surgery methods out of the Hugh Wynter Fertility Management Unit,at the Mona campus, to medical students across the region over C@ribNET. This is but one example of the tremendous potential C@ribNET has for advancin... g the Region's development and transforming how services are delivered to its people. I have explored some of the recent trends in education. One of the primary objectives of CKLN is to promote affordable and easy access to learning and research materials by creating a broadband network of collaborating libraries and academic institutions. This network provides students with the chance to connect with their counterparts across the region and with the wider world of research and education, thus allowing them to share ideas and knowledge in a formal classroom setting. With the the involvement of our major universities and other tertiary institutions, I believe we can expand the scope of our academic reach to the wider global society. I have the utmost trust that informational technology will not just enhance our teaching, learning and research in the region, but will also be used to assist the respective Ministries of Education, our high schools and our colleges in their efforts to improve the quality of and access to education. Ultimately, however, the economic and overall societal impact of C@ribNET will depend entirely on the region's educators, researchers and academic and scientific Communities of Practice joining C@ribNET and leveraging the collaborative tools and services that will be provided through the network in 2014. Going forward one of our key tasks must be that of further raising public, organizational and institutional awareness of the goals of C@ribNET and its emergent NRENs - what they do and the benefits they will bring.
