The pastors are always available to listen and discuss faith issues. 4. How are American Baptists different from Southern Baptists? The short answer is that American Baptists are ecumenical, welcome diversity, encourage gender equality, including the ordination of women, and are more moderate in their interpretation of scripture. Giving of our time, abilities and experience helps us achieve the goals of this faith community. In the process, we make friends, are strengthened in our faith journeys, and benefit personally as we serve others. However, Calvary is a member-supported church, so all the ministry we are able to do here is because of our tithes and generous offerings. The money we give funds our annual operating budget. There is no outside source of funding. We are also a tithing church, and many Calvary people follow the Biblical directive to return a tenth of our resources to God.
