Am I Eligible for Social Security benefits? The first question to consider is not a legal one. The first question is: Do you think you can continue working. In order to be eligible for Social Security disability benefits you either have to have stopped working, or reduced your work activity below what Social Security calls substantial gainful activity. As a general rule, that means your gross earnings, before taxes are taken out, have to be less than about $1,000.00 per month ( $1,040.00 for 2013).
