Paul J. Sally, Jr. is the recipient of the American Mathematical Society's 2000 Award for Distinguished Public Service. He was presented this award in recognition of the quality of his research, for his service to the Society as Trustee, and, most importantly, for his many efforts in improvement of mathematics education for the nation's youth (espe... cially for members of minority and underrepresented groups) and for his mentoring of students. In 2002, Dr. Sally received the MAA's Haimo Award for Distinguished University Teaching. Dr. Sally received his Ph.D. from Brandeis University in 1965. That same year, he joined the faculty at the University of Chicago, where he served as Department Chair from 1977 until 1980. He has founded and guided numerous programs for mathematically gifted youth and Chicago Public School teachers, in addition to publishing many distinguished research papers, editing several books, and supervising eighteen Ph.D. students. "A number of years ago I was struck by the need for high quality textbooks for advanced mathematics courses. In 1997, I decided to collaborate with Brooks/Cole to create a Series in Advanced Mathematics. As editor for the series, I am developing a collection of books in the post-calculus to first year graduate study range, adding several new texts every year. The texts in the series should be relevant to a wide range of undergraduate and graduate students.
