Breakthrough Church was founded in 2001 by Pastors Mike and Michelle Nelson. The opening service was On Easter Sunday in a former night club on Blackstock Road. They met there for five months until the building changed ownership and they were forced to move to a member's garage in Duncan, SC, just outside of Spartanburg. Although this may have seem... ed to be a set back, lives were still being changed, and 10 months later they were able to move to a building located between a sports bar and a bingo establishment on Hwy 295. It was from this building that the outreach ministries began to develop with a church of less than 60 people. Breakthrough began transforming the sanctuary portion of the building every Friday night into a coffee house, while the rear section of the industrial building would be changed to a basketball court and an area for ping pong, volleyball and table games. During the first three months hardly anyone came, but a breakthrough finally took place. Soon every Friday night over 100 teenagers would come to "The End Zone" to experience a different atmosphere. Hundreds of teenagers were saved during this outreach ministry and many still attend Breakthrough today. Sixteen months later, in August of 2003, BOC moved to its' present facility located at 235 E. Blackstock Road. On Easter weekend, 2004, Breakthrough held an Easter Festival at Barnett Park in downtown Spartanburg. This became the largest Easter event in the state of SC and one of the largest in the nation with over 10,000 people in attendance. Since moving to the Blackstock campus, Breakthrough Outreach Center has grown incredibly over the last few years. This surge in attendance brought the average weekly attendance to over 300 people and forced them into multiple services.
