In 2001, during the Brazilian energy crisis, Brazil Energy led the formation of a consortium for the creation of Brasympe Energia S.A., aiming at supporting the Emergency Power Program launched by the Brazilian Federal Government. Brasympe was the leading Independent Power Producer (PIE) of the program, with a total installed capacity of 368 MW dis... tributed among six power plants: four in the state of Espírito Santo (140 MW), one in the state of Sergipe (60 MW) and one in the state of Alagoas (168 MW). In 2005, upon the termination of the agreement with Companhia Brasileira de Energia Emergencial (CBEE), the six Thermal Power Plants (UTEs) were demobilized and the equipment was subsequently sold to the North-American market. In 2007, Brasympe acquired the control of UTE Termocabo, an oil-fueled thermal power plant with installed capacity of 48 MW, located in the state of Pernambuco. In the same year, the plant won a power auction conducted by ANEEL (the Brazilian National Energy for Electric Power), and signed a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) for a term of fifteen (15) years, starting in 2010. The success of Brasympe strengthened Brazil Energy's structure, driving it towards the prospection of new projects, aiming at investing and participating more actively in the power industry in Brazil and abroad. In 2008, Brazil Energy decided to expand its operations to other power generation sources, creating two new companies: Brazil Biomass Energy S.A. (BBE), focused on power generation from biomass, and Brazil Hydropower S.A. (Brazil Hydro), focused on hydroelectric power. BBE is focused on investments for heat and/or power generation from biomass in Brazil. BBE's operation is divided into four segments according to the fuel type and power generation capacity of the enterprise: power plant, co-generation plant, heat recovery and biogas plant.
