A urologist is a physician and a surgeon who has been trained to treat disorders of the male and female urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra) and the male reproductive system (prostate gland, penis and scrotum, and testicles). The following is a summary of the educational training of a urologist: After completing four years of college, a urologist-to-be must pursue four years of medical school. After graduating from medical school, two years of residency training in general surgery are embarked upon before entering a urology residency. After completion of a four year urology residency, an optional extra year of training, referred to as a fellowship, may be undertaken in any of a number of highly specialized area of urology.
