In 1975, Benamy International was a going and growing importer. Morris Manufacturing Company, a Texas customer that I knew from when I was associated with Cunningham Art Products came to see me with a concept of miniature furniture of Early American design. The designs were similar to what you would see in Ethan Allen Furniture stores. The customer gave me the drawings and specifications for the miniature furniture (1/12th scale), and they wanted the company to quote a price. I went to Taiwan and contacted a reliable maker that I had known for several years in the craft industry. After more than a week of negotiations in Taipei, the company reached a price, which I quoted to the customer by telex. The customer accepted the company's price and placed a significant order with a letter of credit. The maker was told that each item must be made exactly as specified and that there would be zero tolerance for variation. The company had to locate machinery, which did not vibrate, and soft wood lumber that would not warp. Within a month, production was started. Within the next two months, the customer called to say that they were going out of the craft and hobby business that they would accept the orders placed but would not reorder.
