Belfort's energy during the 1990's, however, is being focused toward the challenges of automatic observations. When the U.S. National Weather Service announced plans to automate routine surface weather observations, Belfort responded to the challenge and demonstrated its leadership role by designing and qualifying three new sensors for the new ASOS (Automated Surface Observing System) program. VISIBILITY: The Belfort Visibility Sensor was designed with accuracy and reliability in mind. The sensor incorporates extensive self-diagnostics and modular design to completely eliminate lengthy repairs. Its unsurpassed accuracy has made it the industry standard. DIGITAL WIND: Wind Sensors used with ASOS Systems incorporate superior ruggedness for long life under continuous operating conditions. Each wind system includes a built-in controller to monitor system performance and provide complete diagnostic information. PRECIPITATION: The Belfort Precipitation Sensor is designed to measure all forms of precipitation with high accuracy and resolution.
