About Beef.org.nz

Beef Improvement Grouping Ltd (BIG) was formed in 1996 by five significant beef producers based in East Yorkshire. The company is a UK leader in beef genetics producing Stabiliser TM dam line breeding stock. The focus of the breeding programme is to improve the economic production of consistently high quality beef from forage-based systems. The members of BIG have recognised that there is an urgent need to develop an improved suckler cow to replace less efficient Holstein crosses. In response BIG is developing a breeding programme based on the Stabiliser TM. This is a four-breed composite made up of half British breeds and half Continental breeds and it offers the most cost effective suckler cow economics available. BIG is experiencing considerable expansion in its activity with increased bull and semen sales to a growing number of commercial producers wishing to be in control of breeding their own replacements. BIG is experiencing considerable expansion in its activity with increased bull and semen sales to a growing number of commercial producers wishing to be in control of breeding their own replacements. There is no doubt that the changes to the CAP are focusing peoples minds on the need to reduce production costs but at the same time maintaining high levels of output and adding value to product wherever possible. The experiences of all those breeding Stabilisers confirm that the breed is delivering those benefits of easy care, productive cattle which have been so clearly demonstrated to BIG in the US and New Zealand. The extreme docility, high fertility, good milking ability, low birth weights and the ability of the breed to utilise grass very efficiently are all proving to have major economic benefits for breeders. The cross bred makes, which are in effect a 'by-product' of the breeding programme, are also performing well, achieving good growth rates and producing good quality carcasses. The continuing expansion of the Stabiliser breed will deliver these important economic benefits to those producers determined to develop profitable beef herds to supply consumers with consistently good eating quality, healthy, grass fed beef.
