Basco was started in 2001 as an investment and development company by Roger Basmajian. Basco's goal was to invest and redevelop older neighborhoods. The company's conviction was and is that these walkable communities based on traditional urban planning are the communities of the future. This thinking is ingrained in the company's practice and refle... ct in the company's projects, which tend to embrace the urban experience. Furthermore, the company believes these older neighborhoods have a diverse and more interesting architecture. That's why the company's focus is to often redevelop neglected and underutilized properties with new and creative uses, instead of tearing them down. In the process the company has created amazing architecture and rejuvenated entire neighborhoods. In the earlier years Ferndale and Royal Oak were the communities the company focused on. Basco was instrumental along with the help of the DDA in changing the landscape of downtown Ferndale. One of the company's first major successes was convincing Buffalo Wild Wings to come to Ferndale which helped build the momentum that spurred further Basco redevelopments along Nine Mile Road and Woodward Avenue. Outside the box thinking along with the company's efforts in selecting complimentary and diverse tenants, is reflected today in the hot spot that is downtown Ferndale. Basco also redeveloped many properties on Main Street in Royal Oak, most notably the extensive rehab of the Royal Oak Savings Bank which had been vacant for years without a roof. And now this historic building is an unmistakable gem in downtown Royal Oak with a luxury retailer on the main floor and office tenants above.
