Banana Tree restaurants operate a discretionary 10% service charge. In the past, this was shared with staff through a Tronc system. However, this is no longer the case. After careful consultation with the company's team members, who informed the company that they would prefer a guaranteed higher rate of pay to unpredictable extra tips, the company... took the decision to increase the company's hourly rate of pay to well above minimum wage, increase salaries and introduce a new bonus system for all restaurant staff, as well as cash prizes for staff competitions, funding for staff events and other benefits. All of the monies raised from the discretionary 10% service charge contribute towards this enhanced remuneration package which benefits every single member of the company's team. This approach has allowed the company to reward the company's staff ahead of the market rate whilst not impacting on the company's prices. The improved rewards package have been well-received by the company's team members and allows them to more easily secure tenancies or mortgages, benefit from the increased rate of pay when sick or on leave and receive a higher rate of pension contribution.
