AY Architects is an architectural practice, recognised for the quality of its designs and award winning buildings. We aim to produce compelling and sustainable architecture with a cultural and social purpose. We do this through intimately engaging with place, materials, people and history, and by committing ourselves to a reflective process of desi... gn that involves research and creative collaboration. Attention to craft, light and spatial experience, as well as a broader concern about architecture's connection to art and culture are important to us. AY Architects understands architecture primarily as a civic art. We continually explore the social purpose of buildings, whether they are small and temporary or more enduring constructions. We like self-initiating localised projects that may galvanise incremental urban change. In 2007 we were shortlisted for BD's Young Architect of the Year Award and in 2009 our Ruskin Park House received a 'Don't Move Improve Award' for the Best Use of Concrete from New London Architecture. Our festive installation House of Flags was selected by the Greater London Authority and erected on Parliament Square to celebrate the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In 2013 Montpelier Community Nursery won a RIBA National Award and the Stephen Lawrence Prize for the best building in the UK with a construction budget under £1 million. Despite its small size and modest budget, the building was also mid-listed among the 20 very best buildings competing for the 2013 Stirling Prize. It was also Highly Commended by Camden Design Awards. In 2014 we were BD's Small Project Architect of the Year Award Finalist, while Yeoryia was shortlisted for the AJ's Emerging Woman Architect of the Year Award.
