AVUK was delighted to be chosen by the October Clubas their charity partner for 2014 to raise the vital funds needed for our transformational 'Pyramid Project'. The October Club was established in 1987, when a group of individuals working in the City were moved by the plight of Leukaemia sufferers and decided to hold a fundraising dinner at The Sav... oy. This proved so successful that they decided it should become an annual event every October - hence The October Club. For over 26 years the Committee has chosen a charity for which the funds raised will prove transformational and has now raised nearly £10 million with substantial benefits to the charities it has supported including kick-starting ground-breaking research, raising profiles and enabling brave expansion plans. An incredible £547,000 was raised by the October Club to support AVUK 's pyramid project and increase access to auditory verbal therapy across the UK. The funds were raised at The October Club Dinner, attended by approximately 400 largely City-based individuals on Wednesday 15th October 2014. The event combined a dinner with a live auction for lots such as a day with the Red Arrows and an 'Out of Africa' Safari in Kenya. Performing at the event wasJanine Roebuck, AVUK 's patron and the the world's only deaf mezzo-soprano singer, who demonstrated to the audience that having a hearing impairment doesn't have to hinder someone's personal or professional ambitions. 14-year-old James, our young ambassador who is profoundly deaf and learnt to listen and talk with AVUK , addressed, addressed the audience to tell his story - speaking eloquently, with confidence and entertaining the guests with good humour.
