I'm a father and husband, and I deeply understand the desire to provide safety to my family. Like most Californians, I worry about earthquakes and wildfires, especially with what seems to be an increasing severity to these yearly events. And in the past, I wondered if I'd done enough to prepare my family. I've always been a worst-case scenario kind... of guy. I see little value in hoping for the best in life without planning for it. I understand the concern these out-of-control events create. And I won't put the safety of my family at risk when I can take steps today to minimize those very risks. Driven by a deep desire to protect my family and a love of the outdoors and self-sufficiency, I began exploring an approach to emergency and disaster preparedness that would encompass the detail and thought required to truly prepare ourselves. What I experienced was that the process of emergency & disaster preparedness was overwhelming, intimidating, and often times paralyzing. How many times have you said to yourself, I know I need to be ready. But what do I do? Comparing stories, I realized that none of our friends had any kind of plan, any supplies, or any significant preparation. They simply worried about these events and hoped that they would never happen to them. I'm a licensed and certified E.M.T. (Emergency Medical Technician) and what my training instilled in me was the understanding that when we're called upon to help, it is the quality of our training that provides us with the confidence to do what's required. I realized that families, businesses and schools needed the same attention, training, and guidance. A focused hand to lead them through the process to ready their homes, their families, and themselves to act when necessary, whether it be evacuating due to a fire, reunifying after an earthquake, or simply patching up a child or loved one that has gotten injured.
