About Area 3 Envirothon

A multidisciplinary, environmental problem-solving program culminating in an annual series of competitions. Teams of five(5) students train and compete in the following areas: Soils/Land Use study soil properties; classification; erosion; soil profiles; soil surveys; agriculture and urban conservation practices. Wildlife study wildlife management; habitat components; diseases; wildlife identification and how environmental issues affect animals and fish. Current Environmental Issues newspaper and magazine articles on recent environmental issues. Who is Eligible to Compete? Entire classes or groups of students in grades 5-8 (middle school competition) and grades 9-12 (high school competition) may study the five subject areas and send a team of five to represent them. For High School, the students must be enrolled in grades 9-12 and reach age 14-19 by August 8 of the current competition year. Each school or group may register up to three teams for the Area 3 Envirothon. If desired, each of those teams may have up to two alternate team members. Each team must have an advisor. To become an advisor, you can find out more information at the Envirothon School for Advisors page (you will be taken to another site). Teams must have at least three original team members to be eligible to move up to the State Competition. Contact your local Soil & Water Conservation District to register your team. Area 3 is composed of the following eleven counties: Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Guilford, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Orange, Person, Randolph, and Rockingham. The Area 3 Envirothon is the pre-requisite for the State Envirothon competition. Those teams that score in top ranks may move on to the state competition, held at Cedarock Park in Burlington, NC. The top winning high school team will move on to the NCF (National) Envirothon.
