About American Physicians Assurance

American Physicians Assurance Corporation (American Physicians) was established in 1975 in response to a medical professional liability crisis created when most major physician insurers abandoned the state of Michigan. The company was sponsored by the Michigan State Medical Society, and was originally named Michigan Physicians Mutual Liability Company (MPMLC). In 1995, the company began writing medical professional liability coverage in Illinois. The following year, it acquired Louisville-based Kentucky Medical Insurance Company. And, in 1997, it merged with New Mexico Physicians Mutual Liability Company in Albuquerque. In order to better reflect its new multi-state identity, the company changed its name to Mutual Insurance Corporation Of America (MICOA) in late 1998. In December 2000, the company converted from a mutual to a stock insurance company, changed its name to American Physicians Assurance Corporation, and became a wholly owned subsidiary of APCapital, Inc.
