Amber Scientific Pty Ltd was commenced in 1992 after seven years of research and development in reagent manufacture (since 1985). The customer base in the first seven years grew from small private pathology companies interested mainly in Biochemistry reagents, to large private and public hospitals interested mainly in prepared stains for use in Hae... matology, Histopathology and Microbiology. During this time there were also developments in industrial reagents for water analysis, wine analysis, and specific chemical solution reagents for dedicated on line analysis. Due to the emphasis on problem solving, product improvement, customer trials and long-term economy and stability of reagents in production, there has not been a formal marketing program. Growth has come from customer referrals and laboratory supply companies who have sought out sections of the product range for distribution to their own customers. Amber's core business is the mixing of chemicals in solution ready for use in automated instrumentation and diagnostic procedures. There is some activity in laboratory solvents and chemicals used in reagent manufacture only. However, the focus is on reagents and prepared solutions that are competent for the task at hand. This focus is important because there is always a better way to mix chemicals than simply adding a list of ingredients to a solvent base. The order, speed, temperature and type of mixing all play a part in the consistency, reproducibility, performance and expiry of the final solution. In many cases the addition of trace materials affects these parameters dramatically. This information having taken years to assimilate is always open to improvements. The principles in technology to produce dry powder reagents (especially enzymatic vials for reconstitution before use) being first developed is advantageous to reagent production in general.
