But after a month of Zoology, he decided maybe this was not for him. His love of animals came from a childhood spent on his grandfathers farm. Johns grandfather was a carpenter and cab... inet builder as was his son, John's father. When John saw a roommate drawing architectural plans, John thought "Maybe I will give this a try. Six years later, he graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University and became a registered architect in Kansas in 1977. After several entry-level jobs in architecture, John took a job with a metal building contractor as the architect for design build contracts. There, John became familiar with estimating and project management. This added skill set and a desire to advance, opened a new career path at R.D. Andersen Construction Co. in Topeka. During his nine-year tenure, John worked on large public bid market projects such as the Applegate Energy Center for the University of Kansas, Lockton Insurance Office Building in Prairie Village, Kansas and The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America headquarters in Lawrence, Kansas. When R.D. Andersen closed its doors in 1992, John decided to pick up where they left off and ALTMAR Inc. General Contractors was formed. Matthew Ostermann started as a computer engineering student. But after one semester of Intro to Java, he decided maybe this was not for him. Later when a college roommate said he had to finish drawing a barn for class, Matthew asked What major requires students to draw a barn? Architectural Engineering was the answer. Matthew, loving math, and growing up in the construction industry thought, Maybe I will give this a try. Six years later, Matthew graduated Kansas State University with a Master of Science in Architectural Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management.
