The Waimakariri River, or the Waimak as it is called by the locals, was named by a native New Zealand Maori tribe and means "Cold Water". The Waimakariri River travels a total distance of 126 kilometres - from its birthplace in the rugged Southern Alps through steep rock faces and thick native forest, through the braided shallows on the Canterbury Plains, then out to the Pacific Ocean. The crystal clear waters of the river often allow views of salmon and rainbow/brown trout while the shingle beds in the river are home to nesting birds.
