About Alpha Phi Omega

Alpha Phi Omega is a national co-ed service fraternity organized to provide community service, leadership development, and social opportunities for college students. The purpose of the fraternity is "to assemble college students in a National Service Fraternity in the fellowship of principles derived from the Scout Oath and Scout Law of the Boy Scouts of America; to develop Leadership, to promote Friendship, and to provide Service to humanity; and to further the freedom that is our national, educational, and intellectual heritage." The fraternity has several leadership programs to help brothers become better leaders by developing their own personal skills as well as learning more about chapter operations. Alpha Phi Omega seeks to develop friendship and all members to develop a sense of brotherhood by shared experiences through understanding the fraternal history and goals of creating community. The chapter service program provides opportunities to develop social awareness, friendships and leadership skills. The fraternity has established four fields of service in which chapters are involved in: The Zeta Omicron chapter of Alpha Phi Omega was established on May 24, 1948 at the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. The founding group of 31 students and 7 advisors were under the guidance of the chapters first president: Robert Kimball. Zeta Omicron maintained its success until the 1980's; it was then that the chapter was declared inactive. In the spring of 1992, the re-chartering effort was initiated by a Cal Poly student that was formerly associated with Eagle Scouts. His ambition helped to motivate a group of 23 people (including former San Luis Obispo Councilman Paul Brown) in joining his effort of reinitiating the service-based fraternity.
