The most frequent reason children consult a general practitioner is respir... atory morbidity, accounting for about 25% of all consultations by children. RSV infection can be severe and life-threatening in children in developing countries and mortality associated with these conditions can be quite high (eg, the case-fatality rate in children with viral pneumonia ranges from 1.0% to 7.3% in developing countries). It is important to consider preventive measures, such as palivizumab (Synagis) prophylaxis, in high-risk infants. Pediatric clinicians who are up-to-date about risk factors, current recommendations for prevention of respiratory virus infection, and strategies for parent counseling can aid parents in effective decision making and help improve outcomes in their pediatric patients. To improve clinician understanding of current recommendations on prophylaxis against and treatment of acute RSV infection and other potentially severe respiratory illnesses in children.
