By facilitating expert discussion regarding broad-based perspectives on these topics, the conference promoted global thinking, scientific exploration and policy orientation at the individual, social and community level. Besides our special keynote addresses, the conference comprised of several moderator-driven, interactive panel discussions . The opening panel discussion, Advancing the Policy Debate on End of Life Care, briefly described below was held on April 13, 2018, at the United Nations Headquarters in NYC , under the auspices of the Permanent Mission of Romania to the United Nations . The topic of the long-term and end of life care was also a focus topic of the Ninth Working Session of the Working Group on Aging held from 23 to 26 July 2018, at the UN Headquarters. Population aging is expected to exert a growing strain, worldwide, on health care systems, economies, and social institutions. It is a global challenge for the future provision of health care as the world faces the challenges of a growing aging population. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of the new agenda 2030 pledge to leave no one behind and include older persons by implication in 15 of the goals and their targets. The opening panel discussion aimed to provide a platform for a diverse set of stakeholders, including UN member states and UN entities, the private sector, and civil society to undertake a policy dialogue and to enable a better understanding of progress made, and challenges faced, in ensuring access to quality healthcare services including palliative care for older persons.
