We wanted the time reduction, cost savings, precision, and design freedom of 3D printing in our clinic, but found no easy avenue to do this. While 3D printing has been around for a while, and everybody has seen a story about 3D printed prosthesis, we found it was actually very difficult for the average prosthetists to utilize this technology. So in... 2012 we decided it was time for 3D printed prostheses to stop being a novelty and become the standard of care in our profession. Our mission was defined: Learn to model and print quality devices on 3D printers which fit within an O&P clinic's budget, not on cost-prohibitive quarter-million dollar behemoths. With a lot of testing, a DIY kickstarter campaign, and a small printer, we developed our earliest models and proved the efficacy of our concept. Over time, our skills and printers got better. Our entire process grew faster, cheaper, and the models continued to improve. Most importantly, we stayed within our original constraints - keeping everything we did accessible to the average clinic.
