It has been shown that towns with recreational spaces and activities experience less crime, and stronger community connections through a greater sense of place. On average, the outdoor recreation industry generates over 600 billion dollars a year, and can be key in growing or invigorating economies. Thoughtful design and community engagement can result in sustainable economic success, and in turn, regional vibrancy and vitality. Furthermore, developing land in the vein of recreational uses can play a key role in conserving and protecting land for future generations, ensuring opportunities for play, exposure of culture, and stewardship of the wider outdoors. Conservation laws and easements often allow for the development and protection of land in ways that promote recreation, and vice versa, as both can serve as vehicles to preserve and educate.
