Are the times listed for class all classroom time? Yes, the state requires 24 hours of classroom time for teen drivers education. The required 6 hours of driving time (4 observation and 6 behind the wheel) is scheduled in class, based on your schedule and the instructors. Michigan law requires both a Segment 1 and Segment 2 driver education program for students under the age of eighteen. What are the instructional time requirements for the Segment 1 and Segment 2 programs?The Segment 1 driver education program consists of 24 hours in the classroom (twelve two-hour sessions), 6 hours of behind-the-wheel (BTW) instruction and 4 hours of observation time. The Segment 2 program consists of 6 hours in the classroom (three two-hour classroom sessions) focusing on defensive driving/traffic safety. At what age may students enroll in a Segment 1 driver education program?Students are permitted to enroll in a Segment 1 program at the age of 14 years and 8 months. When is a student eligible to secure a Level 1 Learner's License?The student will be eligible to secure a Level 1 Learner's License upon successful completion of a Segment 1 driver education program and having reached the age of 14 years and 9 months. When may a student enroll in a Segment 2 driver education program?The student must have a Level1 Learner's License which has been held for at least three months (90 days).
