A Caring Place

Our school was founded in 1962 by John and Sylvia Carey as The Carey School to provide the community access to quality day care and early childhood education. In 2002 the school was passed on to their daughter, Caren Leder, and two granddaughters, Tiffany Barker and Jessica Macdonald, who renamed the school A Caring Place. Today Jessica and Tiffany... work together as Director and Assistant Director. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was an Italian educator, scientist, physician, philosopher, feminist, and humanitarian. As Maria Montessori said, I have studied the child. I have taken what the child has given me and expressed it and that is what is called the Montessori Method. She came up with this method from observing the development of children, and through her observations she discovered that children possess an innate desire to learn. She advocated developmentally appropriate curriculum at a time when child development was barely understood or even recognized. The Montessori Method of education calls for hands-on, individualized learning within mixed age groups in a child-friendly setting. This method has been successful around the world for more than 100 years. In a Montessori classroom, the prepared environment is crucial because children learn by interacting with their environment A Caring Place uses the Montessori Method of education for the young child. Within this method the children experience activities in the following areas: math, language, social studies, science, art, music, and physical education.
