Since the early days of the Scouting movement in the United States, Great Lakes Council, Boy Scouts of America (GLC) has served the metropolitan Detroit area by shaping the lives and characters of young people. Geographically, Great Lakes Council covers all of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties, and is divided into eight districts. Officially organized into its present form in 2009 with the merger of the Clinton Valley and Detroit Area Councils, Great Lakes Council is one of the largest within the Boy Scouts of America. The council is a wholly-owned corporation owned by the local community and governed by an executive board of directors who are all Scouting volunteers. The council offices are staffed full-time in the form of BSA commissioned professionals who provide service to the council and districts and a support staff who give support to the professional staff while also maintaining the administrative and business functions needed for a council to operate. The two offices for Great Lakes Council are located in Detroit and Waterford. In the heart of midtown Detroit, the Dick and Sandy Dauch Scout Center is part of the revitalization of Detroit. This building was built through the generous donations of Dick and Sandy Dauch, Irving Rose, Richard Marsh, and a host of Scouting supporters. The Waterford Scout Center is located on the campus of the offices for Oakland County. Both centers house not only the professional and support staff of the council, but also a National Scout Shop, offering everything that a Scout or a unit needs for a sucessful program.
