ABMAC was founded in 1937 during the Japanese invasion of Mainland China, as "the American Bureau for Medical Aid to China." It was the first American organization to respond to the health needs of China and the embattled Chinese people. Through ABMAC's services, Chinese and Americans in many parts of the United States combined to supply China with... millions of dollars worth of medical and hospital supplies and medical equipment. In 1942, ABMAC joined with other agencies to form "United China Relief" (later "United Service to China.") Subsequently ABMAC began its program of fellowship training, which continues to the present time in Taiwan. With the move of ABMAC's operations to Taiwan, ABMAC redirected its efforts to advancing the quality of medical care, education and research there.
