Mrs. Rokeya Kabir Mrs. ROKEYA KABIRis Founder and Executive Director of Bangladesh Nari Progati Sangha (BNPS).She holds a Master's degree in Political Science from the University of Dhaka.She has more than thirty years of professional experience in the field of women's rights, human rights and the rights of minorities As recognition of her work, she has been nominated as one of the "1,000 Women for Peace" for the Nobel Peace Prize for 2005.The Bangladesh Nari Progati Sangha (BNPS) founded by her is one of the main women's organizations that has served, since 1986, about 100,000 women directly.Another 800,000 (approximately) people are indirectly involved in the organization's current endeavors, particularly in raising awareness on socio-economic and political empowerment of women's issues.BNPS acquired special consultative status from the ECOSOC of the UN in 1999.Mrs. Kabir is also the organizer, coordinator, and founder of different national level forums and networks, including Association of Development Agencies in Bangladesh, the main umbrella organization of NGOs in the country; Women Development Forum; Sommilito Nari Samaj (United Women's Forum); Coalition for the Urban Poor; Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum; the "Local Governance Forum", which is a national network of organizations working with local governments; VOTE, an alliance of organizations for electoral observation for transparency and empowerment, among others.Mrs. Kabir is also the initiator of different regional-level networks, such as South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication and South Asian Network of Gender Activist and Trainers.She has served as the Gender Focal Person of the Global Committee of the NGO Working Group of the World Bank as well as member of the External Gender Consultative Group of the World Bank from 1998 to 2003.She worked for five years as Deputy Director in the Rural Electrification Board and before that worked as Associate of BIDS (Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies) from 1976 to 1978.Mrs. Kabir has published papers and articles on women's issues and related topics in various national and international publications.
