Meet the Board - Shawn Moore and Willow Alston-Socha
Willow Alston-Socha Willow Alston-Socha is the K-5 Science Specialist for Durham Public Schools. She previously served as an Instructional Coach for NC New Schools, focusing on improving student learning in rural comprehensive high schools. From 2012 to 2015, she served as the STEM Master Teacher for the Mebane Foundation STEM Infusion Grant project with Moore County Schools. Mrs. Alston-Socha has 13 years experience in education and previously taught Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Earth Science at Hoke County High School. In 2011, Willow was awarded the Kenan Fellowship for Curriculum and Leadership Development, where she worked with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction on professional development pertaining to the Common Core State Standards and New Essential Standards. In 2013, Mrs. Alston-Socha completed an internship with the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching. During this internship, she trained as a Seize the Data Literacy Specialist and created a 4-unit Professional Development course for NCDPI. In 2014, Willow was chosen for the North Carolina Governor's Teacher Network where she created a professional development module from the research she conducted on the impact of technology integration on learning. From 2014-2016, Willow was a North Carolina Science Leadership (NCSLA) Fellow, and now serves as the chair of the Advocacy Committee.
