Fostering collaboration through fisheries training | Responsible Fisheries Alliance

Trevor Wilson, chair of the RFA's training working group says: "Often DAFF compliance officers and the City of Cape Town law enforcement officials engage with fishers in a hostile environment.
This usually takes place at the harbour during an inspection of catch landed. However, this course offered fishermen and compliance officers the platform to engage in open and honest discussion on issues relative to compliance in a safe environment. Viking skipper, Andrew Kayster, who has been in the industry for more than four decades, shares this view: "It was the first time in 30 years that I have attended a training course with the compliance and enforcement officers". Exchanging of ideas and sharing of perspectives has according to Wilson "strengthened the collaborative partnership between the compliance sector and the fishing industry". A follow-up training course, offered on 12-13 August, was also declared a success. Twenty more of DAFF's compliance officers attended it. Wilson says; "They welcomed exposure to the background information that shape the permit conditions which they enforce.
