Memorial fund started for fallen Maryville Police Officer

Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp says the officer responded with a Blount County sheriff's deputy to a domestic disturbance.
Crisp didn't identify the officer, saying some family hadn't yet been notified. Moats was wearing a bullet proof vest but the bullet struck him above the line of protection. The law enforcement officers parked their auto at a residence about 70 yards behind the house from which the call originated, the news release states. "When they exited their vehicle, the perpetrator had exited the house, armed with a firearm, and began shooting", Crisp said. Crisp said officers of the department will lean on one another for support in the days to come.

Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp posthumously presented Moats with a medal of valor, which was pinned onto his uniform.
"The quick actions of Officer Moats helped preserve the life of the perpetrator's father and exemplified the behavior above and beyond the call of duty," said Crisp.
