Todd Hutchins, Reynoldsburg City Schools' director of communication, said Reynoldsburg police called school safety director Nicholas Keisel about 6 a.m. to report a phone call from a parent about suspicious activity observed by a student the previous day, along with rumors of a threat to the school.
"We immediately sent our school security officers to the school to investigate, and Reynoldsburg police arrived soon thereafter," Hutchins said. He said staff members were asked to exit the building while police searched for anything that posed a threat. As a precaution, Truro Township Fire Department and the Columbus bomb squad also were brought in to investigate. No students were in the building, as the school day normally begins at 9:20 a.m. Hutchins said Waggoner Road Junior High School parents were notified of the threat shortly after 8 a.m. and that students would be picked up at bus stops at the normal time but transported to the Summit High School campus instead of the junior high school. "At no time were students at Waggoner Road Junior High in any danger," he said. Waggoner Road Middle School students were transported as usual to that building, which is on the same campus as the junior high school. "After a thorough search of the building, police did not find anything that threatened the safety of our students and staff," Hutchins said. Todd Hutchins, the district's director of communications, said students scheduled to be transported to the school were picked up at bus stops and taken to the Summit Road High School campus instead. Students scheduled to attend Waggoner Road Middle School were transported as usual to that building, which is on the same campus. "I sent emails, and we made phone calls to Waggoner Road Junior High School parents between 8:15 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and told them about the threat and that their children would be transported to another school," Hutchins said. He said parents would be notified when police gave the "all clear" so that classes could resume today as usual.
