These men are all current or former members of law enforcement: past Stark County Sheriff Tim Swanson, retired Stark County Sheriff's Department inspector Steve Ready, retired Canton police Lt.
One of the story tellers is Swanson, the former county sheriff. He recalled what happened there on a sunny afternoon more than 15 years ago. Swanson escorted a small group of jail inmates inside the sprawling network of corridors, rooms, stairwells, nooks. Another deputy or two were among the contingent. They were searching for furniture and other items to sell at a county auction. Those details have fuzzed with the passage of time. More vividly recalled is the sound from an upper-floor. "We were back down on the first-floor in one of the hallways and all of a sudden we heard a bed being dragged across the floor," Swanson said. Deputies and inmates traced the origin of the mysterious noise. "You could see where it was drug through the dust," he said. "It was scooted across the floor." The building was vacant. Nobody had separated from the group. "After we got up there and there was nobody there ... you get a little chill and you think, 'What in the hell did that?'" Swanson said.

Swanson, who had retired earlier this year, was reinstated as the county sheriff by the Ohio Supreme Court on Wednesday. The ruling removed George Maier, who was appointed to the position following the death of Sheriff-elect Michael McDonald. County Democrats have 45 days to name an interim sheriff.

A ruling by the Ohio Supreme Court Tuesday removed Maier from office and reinstated Timothy Swanson as sheriff. The Ohio Supreme Court issued a ruling on Wednesday removing George Maier and reinstating Tim Swanson as sheriff. Based on the court ruling, Swanson, who was Stark County sheriff for more than 13 years when he retired earlier this year, was reinstated automatically, and the county commissioners indicated during their regular session on Wednesday he will not have to be sworn in again. When the party chose Maier, Swanson filed a civil lawsuit stating Maier did not meet the qualifications outlined by state law. Swanson contended Maier did not have the law enforcement background required to hold the office. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Swanson said it was not a victory for him, but "an assurance to the citizens of Stark County that a qualified and eligible person will serve in the office of sheriff."
