He is a dual-qualified lawyer specialising in asset management and mutual funds, with particular expertise in the promotion and operation of all types of funds, including both UCITS and non-UCITS. He has over 17 years of legal experience advising funds domiciled in a range of jurisdictions, including the Cayman Islands, Channel Islands and Ireland. Syl was previously General Counsel with Credit Suisse Administration Services (Ireland) Limited, managing its in-house legal and compliance team. Prior to this he was a Senior Associate with the Funds Department of Maples & Calder in Dublin. Syl has also worked as an Associate with William Fry and as a Manager in the legal services department with Daiwa Securities Trust & Banking Group (Europe) plc. Syl has a degree in Law & History and an LLB from University College, Galway, Ireland. He is a qualified solicitor in the Republic of Ireland and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1997. Syl O'Byrne joins Carne as its new group global general counsel.
Syl was previously general counsel for Credit Suisse in Ireland, where his responsibilities included coverage for Credit Suisse's Prime Fund Services business in EMEA, principally its fund administration, depositary and banking business, serviced from Ireland. Syl is a highly experienced lawyer with in-depth knowledge of the global funds industry. He has also worked for Maples & Calder in Dublin as a Senior Associate with the firm's funds practice, and as an Associate in the Asset Management & Funds Department at William Fry. He has worked on a number of ground-breaking fund and platform launches in Ireland during the course of his career. Syl started his career with US law firm Gould & Wilkie LP (now Thompson Hine) in New York. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in January 1997 and qualified as a Solicitor in the Republic of Ireland in 1995. Des Fullam is a widely-recognised figure with 15 years experience in the Irish fund services industry and joins Carne from J.P. Morgan's trust and fiduciary operation where he was a Vice President. In particular, between 2002 and 2010 he worked for the Irish Stock Exchange, overseeing critical funds listing procedures and leading several projects with the Central Bank of Ireland including the prospectus approval process for closed ended funds and the creation of the ISE's multi-lateral trading facility, GEM. At the Exchange, Des sat on the Policy Committee and helped to shape and react to the Irish and EU policy agenda for funds. He is familiar with all aspects of fund listing requirements in Ireland. Des began his financial services career with Deutsche International in Ireland, in the trustee department. He qualified as a barrister at the Honorable Society of King's Inns in Dublin, and has an MBA in Financial Services from University College Dublin (Michael Smurfit Business School). Des will be acting as the Designated Person for Carne's AIFMD-compliant Management Company. Both Syl and Des will also be joining Carne's panel of Irish-based independent fund directors.
