Sue Hockland
Sue Hockland semi-retired in July 2012 after 36 years working for ADAS and latterly The Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera), where she is now an Emeritus Fellow. Sue graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Zoology from the University of London in 1975, and obtained a PhD in the bionomics of Aphelenchoides species in 2001. Her main interests are the transfer of science into practice, in the early years to facilitate integrated invertebrate control programmes in horticulture and agriculture, but more latterly working with other nematologists in Fera and around the world investigate the biology of, and manage the control of, plant-parasitic nematodes in phytosanitary and other crop protection programmes. Nematode research projects have included the integrated control of plant-parasitic nematodes in vegetables, the identification and control of potato cyst nematodes, and the identification of nematodes to species, particularly the genera Aphelenchoides and Xiphinema. Sue now offers a consultancy and training service in plant nematology to a wide range of customers worldwide, and participates in the production of international diagnostic protocols and reviews of papers submitted to a selection of journals. As a co-opted member of the Group, Sue enjoys helping to organise the annual Advances in Nematology meeting held in London every December.
