WMC Board Welcomes Four New Trustees - News Archive -Valley Health

Winchester Medical Center's Board of Trustees recently welcomed four new members: Steve Cluss, Sherif Kaiser, MD, Diane Kearns, and Jim Stutzman.
Steven E. Cluss retired after a 32-year career as an executive in the lumber industry. He was Chief Operations Officer for O.C. Cluss Lumber Co. in Uniontown, PA, before moving to Winchester to become President of Valley Lumber & Building Materials. Cluss earned a degree in business administration from Gettysburg College. He has served as board president of Powhatan School, and has served on the boards of Top of Virginia Builder's Association, Habitat for Humanity Restore, Boy's & Girl's Club, and the vestry of Christ Episcopal Church. Cluss, Kaiser, Kearns and Stutzman are joined by fellow Winchester Medical Center Trustees: Harry F. Byrd, III, Chairman; Gerald J. Bechamps, MD; William F. Brandt, Jr.; Thomas T. Gilpin; Judge Elizabeth Kellas; Clifton L. "Kip" Rutherford; John S. Scully, IV; Harry S. Smith; George K. Van Osten, MD; and James R. Wilkins, Jr.

Mr. Brockwell noted that the management of Valley Lumber would remain with the company including Steve and Teresa Cluss, Valley's owners.Steve Cluss of Valley Lumber noted that the cultures of the two companies were very similar including management philosophies regarding customer relationships.He added that the two companies combined would bring additional benefit to both customers and employees of Valley Lumber.

"There is no question about [expansion]," Steve Cluss, former owner of Valley Lumber, said.The change in ownership will be hard to notice, Cluss said. "From a customer standpoint, if they walked in, they wouldn't know the difference," he said.Employees - there are approximately 55 -may be a little "unsettled" with the change initially, he added, but once they get to know the Roper business their nerves should be calmed. "[And] I just thought the economics of scale could bring some benefits to all of us," Cluss said.
