Stefan Toepler, Director Dr. Stefan Toepler assumed the Directorship of the Center for Arts & Culture in January 2005.He continues to hold the position of Assistant Professor of Nonprofit Studies in the Department of Public and International Affairs at George Mason University.The recipient of a doctoral fellowship from the German equivalent to the National Science Foundation and a former Johns Hopkins Fellow in Philanthropy, Dr. Toepler holds a doctorate in business administration and economics from the Free University of Berlin, Germany.An Executive Editor of the Journal of Arts Management, Law and Society since 2002, his publications appeared in such journals as the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Administration & Society, the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, the International Journal of Public Sector Management, the Journal of Arts Management, Law and Society, the Journal of Cultural Economics, the European Journal of Cultural Policy, Nonprofit Management & Leadership, and Voluntas-International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations.Next to numerous books and articles in German, he was the co-editor of Private Funds, Public Purpose: Philanthropic Foundations in International Perspective (Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers, 1999); contributing author of Global Civil Society: Dimensions of the Nonprofit Sector (Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies, 1999); and currently co-edits a volume on Foundation Legitimacy in Europe and the United States.A resident of Chevy Chase, Dr. Toepler joined the board of the Arts Council of Montgomery County in January 2000 and served as its President in 2003.
