CHEST: Viagra Efficacy for PAH Sparks Debate - CME Teaching Brief - MedPage Today

"I was a little taken aback" by the vigor of the attacks, said Shelley Shapiro, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles. Sildenafil, under the brand name Revatio, was approved by the FDA in June to treat PAH patients who are in World Health Organization class I. The approved dosage is 20 mg every eight hours.The patients in these two studies were mostly class IV. Dr. Shapiro was the lead investigator on a retrospective review of 14 patients with PAH with right heart failure who had been treated with Viagra for at least a year. Dr. Shapiro said that there are two issues concerning IV Flolan Dr. Shapiro said the controversy shouldn't obscure the fact that in her study, at least, patients got better."You had patients who couldn't get out of bed and were Class IV who went home and managed to stay on single-drug therapy for extended periods of time," she said. "That's an indication of progress," she said. She added patients were "not condemned to a life on sildenafil -- if they deteriorated, they got other drugs."
