The pops and classics are showcased in a major way this SummerFest with five conductors - MIM Resident Conductor Ryan Murray, MIM Artistic Director Pete Nowlen, Jeffrey Reed, Lucinda Carver, and David Lockington - taking on the sublime music of Felix Mendelssohn, a Mozart marathon featuring the Mozart Piano Quartet in G Minor with special guest pianist Konstantin Soukhovetski and his epic final symphony, two of the all time great works for string orchestra including Dvorak's Serenade for Strings and Holst's St. Paul's Suite, and a stirring program of Russian favorites including the 1812 Overture.
Finally rounding out the team is Chorus Director Ryan Murray who is highly regarded throughout California. Murray's dynamic conducting, engaging persona and deeply held passion for the arts have allowed him to steadily build a robust career conducting professional orchestras since the age of 22. "Ryan has led our Chorus with mastery and singular competence," said Ms. Bartolucci. With these new responsibilities, Mr. Murray will support our Guest Conductors, as well as conduct those concerts where Guest Conductors were not available or appropriate," she added. A busy man, Ryan James Murray is a highly regarded conductor in steady demand as both a performer and educator throughout California. Ryan has been the Choral Director of the Music in the Mountains Chorale since 2008, garnering rave reviews from audiences and performers alike. Additionally, Ryan was recently named Music Director for the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra, as well as being named Artistic Director of the Napa Valley Youth Symphony; with which he will make his conducting debut at Carnegie Hall during the 2014 season. Widely praised for his skill on the podium, Ryan's dynamic conducting, affable personality and deeply-held passion for the arts has allowed him to connect deeply with orchestras and audiences alike. Ryan is passionate about music education and has worked as a guest clinician for youth orchestras and choirs throughout California and has served previously as the co-director for the California Youth Symphony Summer Orchestra Camp. Ryan also holds the position of Music Director of Townsend Opera in Modesto, California. Since 2008, Ryan has led the company in many critically acclaimed productions, including highly lauded performances of Carmen and La Traviata. Ryan also serves as the Assistant Conductor and Director of Vocal Activities for the Vocal and Instrumental Teaching Academy (VITA) in Sacramento, California. Focusing on education, Ryan recently led the VITA orchestra in performing the Carnegie Hall 'Link-Up' program; an interactive concert culminating from a yearlong curriculum for young students. Ryan previously acted as a Faculty Conductor for the Bay Area Summer Opera Theater Institute (BASOTI), a nationally acclaimed summer program for pre-professional opera singers. He also served as a Faculty Conductor for the Opera Academy of California Summer Program. In this position Ryan helped to train emerging young artists and worked alongside conductors and voice teachers from opera companies around the world. In 2013, Ryan was selected as a runner-up for the prestigious Ansbacher Fellowship for Young Conductors with the Vienna Philharmonic at the Salzburg Festival. In addition, Ryan was selected to participate in the University of Oregon Conducting Workshop with Master Teacher Neil Varon of the Eastman School of Music, as well as the 2013 Waterville Valley Music Center Conducting Masterclass with Maestro Kenneth Kiesler in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. Ryan graduated summa cum laude from California State University, Sacramento, with degrees in bassoon and vocal performance. While completing his studies at CSUS, he served as Assistant Conductor of the orchestra and opera programs and performed as a guest soloist. He went on to teach bassoon at California State University, Sacramento in 2010.

Ryan Murray, MSO Associate Conductor and Youth Orchestra Music Director Ryan Murray, MSO Associate Conductor and Youth Orchestra Music Director Ryan Murray's dynamic conducting, natural musicality and deeply held passion for the arts have allowed him to steadily build a robust career since his professional debut at the age of just 22. Ryan is currently the Associate Conductor for the Modesto Symphony Orchestra and Music Director for the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra; with whom he made his conducting debut at Carnegie Hall in 2014. Since his appointment in 2013, Ryan has consistently worked to improve the quality, skill and prominence of the youth orchestra, and now leads an ensemble that features over 60 students from the greater Modesto area. He is also Artistic Director of Townsend Opera and Resident Conductor & Choral Director of the Music in the Mountains Summer Festival in Nevada County, California. As part of a joint-collaboration, Ryan served as Music Director for Fresno Grand Opera's mainstage productions of contemporary opera for two seasons, and previously served as a staff conductor for the Bay Area Summer Opera Theater Institute (BASOTI) and The Opera Academy of California in San Francisco. Effortlessly moving between genres, Ryan currently enjoys a wide range of performance genres & platforms, including traditional orchestral and operatic repertoire, pops performances, and a notable emphasis on contemporary American operatic works. Ryan has recently garnered national recognition for his dynamic, compelling performances of contemporary opera and is the current winner of the 2016/17 American Prize in Opera Conducting for his highly lauded production of A Streetcar Named Desire. He was a 2016 semi-finalist for the Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for the Performance of American Music and received honorary mention for the American Prize in Youth Orchestra Conducting. Ryan is also a past winner of the Vienna Philharmonic's prestigious Ansbacher Fellowship for Young Conductors, and spent the summer in residence alongside the Vienna Philharmonic at the 2014 Salzburg Festival. Driven by a lifelong passion for learning, Ryan has attended masterclasses and seminars around the world. Ryan recently attended the 2017 Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music's Conductors Workshop, and was one of just eight conductors worldwide to attend the Time of Music Summer Festival Masterclass in Finland led by Principal Guest Conductor of the Los Angles Philharmonic, Susanna Mälkki; he also recently attended a contemporary music symposium led by Alan Gilbert featuring the New York Philharmonic. Past events include the Aurora Chamber Festival in Sweden, where he studied under Maestro Kurt Masur, the Lucerne Festival Academy's Conducting Masterclass in Switzerland, and the Eastman School of Music's Summer Conducting Institute featuring the Rochester Philharmonic. Ryan holds degrees, summa cum laude, in Bassoon Performance and Voice Performance from California State University, Sacramento.
