CONTINENTAL DRIFTERS / LIVE REVIEWS

Band: Peter Holsapple, Susan Cowsill, Vicki Peterson, Robert Mache, Mark Walton, Russ Broussard.
There's a generosity at the heart of the Drifters, as guitarist Robert Mache, bassist Mark Walton and drummer Russ Broussard each have a chance to shine. The five performers, who also write the material, spread across the front of the stage, equally sharing the workload of playing and singing, but the star of the band is the most unheralded member, sitting in the back: drummer Russ Broussard. Not a song went by that wasn't elevated by Broussard's unpredictable N.O.-style funky riddums; he shifted tempos throughout the songs, giving them a playful, staggering quality. Vicki Peterson, Robert Mache, and Mark Walton play so tight and instinctively together and driven by Russ Broussard's powerful pounding, the group exhibits a sound both highly professional and energetic and enjoyable with a capital E. The mostly shoeless Drifters Mark Walton, Susan Cowsill, Robert Mach, Peterson, Russ Broussard and Peter Holsapple offered selections from their critically praised new disc, Vermillion (Razor & Tie), including the standouts "Rain Song" and "Who We Are, Where We Live."

CONTINENTAL DRIFTERS / Offbeat Cover Story

Playing with others has become a source of pride with the band-"I think we're one of the only bands who does it on a regular basis," Cowsill said-and "it makes us a better band," drummer Russ Broussard pointed out.
Drummer Broussard, the most recent addition, joined before Vermillion was recorded in 1998. We'd watch songs develop and think, 'Wow, that's pretty cool.'" Recording Better Day, Russ Broussard said, "It felt like we were hosting ourselves. When they talk about going to work at Dockside, the descriptions sound like vacations, complete with crawfish boils, barbecues, and boat rides with "Captain Rusty"-as Peterson called Broussard-"down to The Wa Wee, the local bar," Maché remembered.

With Robert Mach, another Angeleno gone south, having replaced Ganucheau on guitar, and Cajun-country native (and former pro bike racer Russ Broussard) succeeding Nuccio on drums, Vermilion has a gorgeous softness.
"It was feeling briefly like an adversarial kinda thing," Broussard admits. "Them and us -- we both needing Vicki. Drummer Russ Broussard watches his 3-year-old son pedal around the empty venue on a small bicycle equipped with training wheels. By the time they recorded their second album, "Vermilion," in 1998, drummer/vocalist Nuccio had been replaced by Broussard, formerly of the Lafayette Cajun rock band The Bluerunners. "Vermilion" generated reams of critical praise, but most of its songs dated back some years and were written and arranged before Broussard joined the band. Broussard drove the songs, stamping them with his distinct pedigree. The Drifters current, and presumably most durable, roster includes Walton (ex-Dream Syndicate), Holsapple (ex-dB's, ex-sideman for R.E.M. and Hootie & the Blowfish), Mache (ex-Steve Wynn Band, Sparks), Peterson (ex-Bangles), Susan Cowsill (of the 60s sibling band the Cowsills, after whom the Partridge Family was modeled), and drummer Russ Broussard (ex- Bluerunners, Terrence Simien's zydeco band).
