The benefits of creating a network of providers to ease the burdens of the extended care referral process are driving hospitals and other care facilities nationwide to develop small, regional groups, but most are still not online, says Bob Maerz, a director at the clinical practice group at First Consulting Group, Long Beach, Calif."Moving patients into long-term care facilities has always been an Achilles Heel for hospitals," he says."So this is a concept that is and has been utilized, but most of these networks are still using paper to exchange referrals," he says.Payers may be a driving force behind developing these online networks, Maerz says.If hospitals can move non-acute patients out of the hospital bed quicker and into a long-term care facility, payers, hospitals and patients will save money."Most patient services that are received today, outside of surgery, trauma and acute exacerbations of medical problems can be received in non-acute care centers," he says.
