Rita Lewis
Southeast Missouri State University - Rita Lewis Southeast Missouri State University Alumni Association Rita Lewis Rita Lewis, a 1984 Southeast Missouri State University graduate, has worked for royalty. After spending four years in Saudi Arabia working for the prince's family, Rita now works at St. Anthony's Medical Center as a clinical safety manager (CSM). Her long road to royalty and back started with her education at Southeast. Rita obtained an Associate of Arts in nursing at Southeast. She says she chose to attend Southeast because it was close to home, which enabled her to continue her work at her hometown hospital. "Southeast has one of the best nursing programs," Rita says. "We had great instructors and great clinical experiences-so much so that when I graduated and moved to Philadelphia, I was prepared for my first job. My hat goes off to Southeast for this preparation." Rita says living in the dorms formed some of her favorite Southeast memories. She met many good friends and had great experiences. She advises current Southeast students to "live in the dorms, enjoy your experience, get involved, cherish new people you meet and most importantly, study!" After graduating from Southeast, Rita moved to Philadelphia, Penn., to start her career. Two years after working in Philadelphia, she left to pursue her dream to become a traveling nurse. She worked at hospitals in Maine, New York, Florida, Texas, California, Indiana and Illinois. "I loved the excitement and challenge of changing jobs every few months," Rita says about her days as a traveling nurse. "I have met some wonderful people in the course of my travels. It helped make me the nurse I am today." When Rita was working as a traveling nurse, she made the decision to work in Saudi Arabia because she needed a change and wanted to work in an exotic place. She saw an advertisement in a nursing journal and flew to Nashville, Tenn., to train and prepare for life in a foreign country. Nurses from all over the U.S. traveled to Saudi Arabia with Rita. Though she and the rest of the nurses were trained and taught what to expect in Saudi Arabia, Rita was shocked when she arrived overseas. "I will never forget when we stepped off the plane in Riyadh and we went into the bathroom," Rita says. "The first stall we opened had a hole in the floor. That was it-I was going back home if this was their idea of a bathroom! I didn't. I stayed and loved every minute of the four years I was there." A few months after arriving in Saudi Arabia, Rita was recruited for a clinic that was opening on the palace grounds of Crown Prince Abdullah (who is currently king). Rita and her colleagues provided care to his wives and children. "I did meet him on a few occasions," Rita says of the prince. "It was a great opportunity to live and work in a culture so different from my own. It was a great experience, and I met some great people." While working in Saudi Arabia, Rita also traveled to England, Germany and Russia. When Rita returned to the U.S., she worked as a traveling nurse in Illinois, Maine, Ohio and North Carolina, where she met her husband. She and her husband moved to Missouri in 2004, where Rita worked as a traveling nurse and had local contracts. In 2010, she completed a 16 week contract at St. Anthony's and applied for a full-time position. "I have not once regretted my decision," Rita says of ending her travels. "St. Anthony's is a wonderful place to work." Currently, Rita's position as a CSM at St. Anthony's Medical Center is a position of leadership. The CSM is a professional nurse leader who has responsibility for developing, achieving and maintaining the goals of a unit or department by focusing on the unit's daily operations. The CSM is also responsible for managing developmental functions as delegated by the nurse manager. Rita loves her job because it allows her to round the floor to ensure her patients have a positive experience and all their needs are met. "I never know what my shift will bring, and I think this is what I love most about the job-this and the people I work with," Rita says. In addition to working as CSM, Rita is studying to take the Medical-Surgical Certification exam. Rita lives in O'Fallon, Mo., with her husband of 12 years, James, and her two dogs, Patches and Brownie. She enjoys cross-stitch, reading, scrapbooking, traveling and running. Recently, she finished a 5K in 40 minutes. Rita claims she is addicted to 5Ks. When asked about future plans, Rita says she wants to continue in her current position and eventually go back to school. She says, "You can do anything you set your mind to.
