Today, we even have drugs that can help prevent the development of breast cancer for women at high risk. "Care has become much more specialized," Dr. Gor says. Other examples of targeted therapies being developed include a class of drugs called PARP inhibitors which are showing promise among those that carry the BRCA mutation, says Dr. Gor. Instead, they "try to pay attention to how the diagnosis affects the whole patient in terms of their daily life and everyday well being," says Dr. Priya Gor.
Dr. Gor is a breast cancer specialist who completed her fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Pennsylvania, where she also received a masters degree in clinical trials. She is joined at Regional Cancer Care by Dr. Stephen Zrada, who is a general oncologist and completed his fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University. Both doctors believe in looking at how all facets of the disease can affect a patient while taking note of each patient's unique needs and circumstances. "In our breast cancer program, our most important partner is the patient. We work closely with breast surgeons, radiation oncologists and pathologists, but we also try to look at how this disease and its treatment fit into a woman's life," Dr. Gor says. "We do national cooperative group trials as well as pharmaceutically sponsored trials," Dr. Gor says. "These trials allow us to offer the latest drugs for treatment." The majority of Regional Cancer Care Associates patients have "really great outcomes," Dr. Gor says, which she believes is a testament to the women who have participated in clinical trials.
